Both the original Polish version of the novel (published in 1961) and its English translation are titled Solaris.Jean-Michel Jasiensko published his French translation in 1964 and that version was the basis of Joanna Kilmartin and Steve Cox's English translation in 1970 (published by Walker & Co., and republished many times since). Mar 24, 2017  Solaris comes closer to being a traditional SF novel than most of his works, but its main thrust is still philosophical. There is a deep strain of irony which runs through this work, for all its occasionally grim moments. The article uses the word visitor, apparently based on its meaning within the Solaris story, but fails to explain what visitors are, resulting in an incomprehensible plot description unless one reads the book:( I'd love to have a better description of the plot and an explanation of what a visitor is, so sources describing the Solaris visitors.

  • In science fiction: Alien encounters

In Stanisław Lem’s Solaris (1961; films 1972 and 2002), the sentience on an alien planet is so metaphysically distant from humanity that it causes its cosmonaut investigators to hallucinate and collapse. The Solaris alien is a permanent enigma, completely unframable by any human thought process. Hal Clement’s Mission…

At nineteen hundred hours ship’s time I climbed down the metal ladder past the bays on either side into the capsule. Inside, there was just enough room to raise my elbows. After I attached the end of the cables into the port jutting from the side of the capsule, my space suit filled with air and from that point on I couldn’t make the slightest movement. I stood, or rather hung suspended, in a bed of air, all of one piece with my metal shell.

During the Soviet era, Polish writer Stanislaw Lem was the most celebrated SF author in the Communist world. Although he read Western SF when he was young, he soon found it shallow and turned for inspiration to the long tradition of Eastern European philosophical fantasy. Western readers not familiar with this tradition often misread his works, expecting more action-oriented, technophilic fiction. Solaris comes closer to being a traditional SF novel than most of his works, but its main thrust is still philosophical. There is a deep strain of irony which runs through this work, for all its occasionally grim moments.

Stanislaw Lem has never been beloved by the science fiction establishment. Philip K. Dick accused him of being a communist agent. Members of the Science Fiction Writers Association booted him from their group.

One problem which recurs from time to time in intelligent science fiction is the absence not only of religion, but even of religious yearning. Science fiction in its more morbid manifestations is existentialist or nihilistic, taking for its basis the tragic presumption of man alone in a meaningless cosmos.
